Journeyman catcher who spent 2021 in Tigers system signs with new team

Maybe if Eric Haase hadn’t turned into Babe Ruth last summer, Juan Centeno would have gotten a call-up to Detroit. But Haase hit well, and Centeno spent the season bouncing between Double-A Erie and Triple-A Toledo. The veteran backup catcher signed a minor-league deal with the Arizona Diamondbacks this week. The Tigers opted to retain both Haase and veteran Dustin Garneau as potential backups for starter Tucker Barnhart in 2022. Unlike Centeno, who spent the entire 2021 season in the minor leagues, Greiner ended the year on the 40-man roster and thus isn’t able to sign with a team during the ongoing transactions freeze.

Tigers winter roster decisions: Who’s back? Who’s on the bubble? Who’s out?

DETROIT -- The offseason officially begins after the conclusion of the World Series, but it’s likely the Detroit Tigers -- and other clubs -- will begin their winter roster pruning before that. Some of the decisions will be easy, like dropping players who were used as stopgap roster fill-ins throughout the summer. Tigers mailbag: Have 2 new catchers helped spark team’s surge?

But it hasn’t escaped notice that a significant change at one position has roughly coincided with the Tigers’ late-May hot streak. Q: Do Haase and Rogers really represent that big of an upgrade over Ramos and Greiner? Ultimately I think Ramos can still be useful as a designated hitter, pinch-hitter and, yes, a backup or third catcher. Q: Who will the Tigers use later in the summer when Mize and Skubal hit their innings limits? The Tigers haven’t given a specific number, but Mize is currently on pace for 180 innings in a 162-game season.
