Workplace discrimination lawsuit against Women’s Huron Valley Correctional Facility reaches settlement
The U.S. Department of Justice announced Thursday, Feb. 18 it had reached a settlement with the state of Michigan and the Michigan Department of Corrections to resolve a sexual discrimination lawsuit filed by the federal government four years ago. Feds sue Michigan prison system, claim discrimination against female guardsThe claim stemmed from several sexual discrimination charges filed by 28 female correctional officers who worked in the all-female prison. The lawsuit sought a court order requiring the state to stop what it calls discriminatory job assignment and transfer policies at Huron Valley, a facility that houses more than 2,200 women inmates and has more than 330 correctional officers -- 85 percent of which are women. “This settlement agreement is an important first step in eliminating the sex discrimination that has so hampered the workplace for female correctional officers currently assigned to the Women’s Huron Valley Correctional Facility.”The settlement, pending court approval, orders the state to pay $750,000 in compensatory damages to eligible female guards who worked in the Huron Valley Correctional Facility from 2009 to present and lift the current transfer freeze at the facility for female officers. A court hearing in the U.S. District Court Eastern District of Michigan to review the settlement agreement has not been scheduled as of yet.

The Huron Valley Schools district is shifting to remote learning for at least a week after Oakland County’s coronavirus (COVID-19) outbreak risk level was increased last week. A level E risk determination means that there are 150 or greater cases per million with a 20 or greater percent positivity rate. There are school districts in the state and country that are operating in counties with a level E risk determination. Huron Valley Schools will be moved to full remote learning for at least the week of November 2nd. The state’s new risk level appears to be largely due to an increased infection rate and rapid increase of daily new COVID-19 cases.
