Massive 25-foot sculpture to be permanently installed outside U-M Museum of Art
Titled “Behind the Walls,” the sculpture was acquired through a gift by long-time university supporters J. Ira and Nicki Harris. Jim Harbaugh currently holds the J. Ira and Nicki Harris Family Head Football Coach position. The Harrises have long admired Plensa’s work, and have several of his pieces in their private collection. “Nicki and I are thrilled to help bring ‘Behind the Walls’ to UMMA,” J. Ira Harris said in a statement. Outside UMMA, “Behind the Walls” will replace Mark di Suvero’s “Shang,” which was on long-term loan since 2009.
New art installation ‘blankets' U-M’s Museum of Art in Ann Arbor
ANN ARBOR – If you’ve driven by the University of Michigan Museum of Art over the past week, you may have noticed that the building has undergone a complete transformation. A worker installs Ibrahim Mahama's artwork at the University of Michigan Museum of Art. (Copyright 2020 Michigan Photography)Mahama visited Ann Arbor in 2019 as a Penny Stamps Speaker Series presenter. “Mahama’s installation, for UMMA, is both a prompt and a promise: We want to be transparent about histories of colonialist collecting practices and critical towards what stories we tell about our works of art and why.”Krugliak echoed De Becker, saying how timely Mahama’s installation is. Mahama has another installation running alongside “In-Between the World and Dreams” at the Institute for the Humanities Gallery at 202 S. Thayer St.
