Joe Jimenez and 3 more under-the-radar Tigers who could make big difference in 2022
After some debate, the club extended him a contract for 2022 for which he will be paid $1.79 million. Officially, Jimenez is not currently in the Tigers’ back-end quartet of relievers that includes Gregory Soto, Michael Fulmer, Jose Cisnero and newcomer Andrew Chafin. “I love the way he’s come into camp and really focused on elevating the ball to the pull side,” Hinch said. LAKELAND, Fla. -- The Detroit Tigers reassigned veteran reliever Jacob Barnes to minor-league camp after Monday’s game against the New York Yankees. Tigers reach deals with 7 players, but could face Spencer Turnbull in arbitration battle
LAKELAND, Fla. -- The Detroit Tigers reached deals with seven arbitration-eligible players but appear ready to “go to trial” with injured starting pitcher Spencer Turnbull. Players eligible for arbitration have spent between three and six years on an MLB active roster. In most cases, players and clubs reach a deal on their own without having to resort to arbitration. The Tigers and Turnbull are allowed to continue negotiating up until the arbitration hearing, but the Tigers and many MLB clubs are known for a “file and trial” policy. His 2023 salary will be similar or identical to his 2022 salary, meaning a victory in arbitration could ultimately be worth $1.55 million.mlive.com
Tigers cut ties with Matthew Boyd, but choose to bring back 8 other players
The Detroit Tigers declined to offer a 2022 contract to Matthew Boyd, making the veteran left-handed pitcher a free agent for the first time in his career. Players like Boyd are said to be “non-tendered” and are free to sign with any team. By tendering a contract, the Tigers are committed to negotiating a contract with the player and going through the arbitration process if necessary. Tigers winter roster decisions: Who’s back? Who’s on the bubble? Who’s out?
DETROIT -- The offseason officially begins after the conclusion of the World Series, but it’s likely the Detroit Tigers -- and other clubs -- will begin their winter roster pruning before that. Some of the decisions will be easy, like dropping players who were used as stopgap roster fill-ins throughout the summer. Tigers stumble in series opener vs. Royals
DETROIT -- The Detroit Tigers honored Miguel Cabrera before the game, but fans didn’t have much to cheer about once it got under way. The Tigers trailed 1-0 until the bottom of the sixth, when Eric Haase ripped an RBI single to right, scoring Robbie Grossman. Adalberto Mondesi tripled and then scored on Ryan O’Hearn’s RBI single past a drawn-in infield. Tigers’ Joe Jimenez returning from COVID list; rookie reliever sent down
DETROIT -- The Detroit Tigers plan to reinstate reliever Joe Jimenez to the active roster on Wednesday, 16 days after he tested positive for COVID-19. The Tigers have optioned right-handed reliever Drew Carlton to Triple-A Toledo to create a roster spot for Jimenez. Jimenez, 26, has endured an up-and-down year for the Tigers, battling control at times while looking like a valuable leverage reliever at others. Tigers mailbag: Should Tigers stand pat at catcher or acquire someone new?
DETROIT -- Detroit Tigers catcher Eric Haase has hit a lot of home runs. Yes, the Tigers could stand pat, but I don’t think they will. If the Tigers don’t bring back Greiner and/or Garneau, they will surely sign someone with a similar profile to provide minor-league depth. Detroit Tigers reliever Michael Fulmer (32) throws a pitch during their MLB game against the Cleveland Indians at Comerica Park in Detroit, on Saturday, August 14, 2021. Tigers’ 100-percent vaccination rate kept players in the game
They were all allowed to play on Monday because, like every other player on the Tigers, they were vaccinated. If an unvaccinated player had been in close contact with Jimenez, he would have been held out for contact tracing. If several players had been in the same situation, the Tigers would have very likely been forced to postpone Monday’s game while they scrambled for roster replacements. The Tigers were allowed to stop using masks way back on April 15 after becoming the first team to meet the 85 percent vaccination threshold. Hinch revealed this week that the player vaccination rate was now up to 100.mlive.com

The Tigers will also shuffle coaching duties, with bullpen coach Juan Nieves in the dugout as pitching coach. “We’re very comfortable with the testing that we’ve done and the contact tracing,” Hinch said. Who are candidates to be Tigers’ closer in 2021? Will they even have one?
LAKELAND, Fla. -- Will Gregory Soto be the Detroit Tigers’ closer? The closer role has seemed somewhat superfluous for the Tigers over the last several years, a distinction that mattered more in fantasy baseball than the real-life variety. Let’s start with Jimenez, 26, who has spent most of his career as Closer of the Future (2017-2018) or actual closer (2019-2020). Obviously, Hinch and the Tigers hope to be better in 2021 than they have been in the previous four seasons. If the Tigers opt to keep Rule 5 Draft pick Akil Baddoo (29), Castro’s path to a roster spot will be a lot tighter. After Teheran, the veteran non-roster invitees most likely to win a roster spot are probably Erasmo Ramirez (34) and Derek Holland (35).
