Tigers agree to deals with 2 players, avoiding arbitration
The Detroit Tigers won’t be going to arbitration with any of their players this spring. The Tigers previously reached agreements with outfielder Austin Meadows ($4.3 million) and left-handed pitcher Tyler Alexander ($1.875 million). Arbitration eligible players generally have between three and six years of Major League service time. Most of the time, teams and players reach an agreement on their own without having to go to an arbitration hearing in the spring. The Tigers have gone to arbitration with a player only once since 2001 when they went to a hearing with Michael Fulmer in 2019.

The Tigers will receive well-regarded infielder Justyn-Henry Malloy and left-handed pitcher Jake Higginbotham. The Tigers had several valuable trade pieces in the bullpen -- Jimenez, Gregory Soto and Alex Lange among them -- and it was widely expected that at least one reliever would be dealt this winter. “I think anytime a reliever puts up a really good year, he’s going to generate a lot of interest,” Harris said. pic.twitter.com/c0LjeRxMEs — Detroit Tigers (@tigers) December 8, 2022TIGERS’ 40-MAN ROSTER (39)Left-handed pitchers (6): Tyler Alexander, Matthew Boyd, Eduardo Rodriguez, Tarik Skubal, Gregory Soto, Joey Wentz.

The most notable moves came Friday night, when the Tigers cut ties with longtime infielders Jeimer Candelario, Harold Castro and Willi Castro. mlive.comWho will Tigers keep? Final major deadline for roster decisions is Friday.
The final important deadline on the early postseason calendar is Friday, when teams must decide whether to tender contracts to players not already under contract for 2023. The Tigers began the offseason with 12 arbitration-eligible players and have already parted ways with three of them. “Those decisions are really tough, especially for me because I don’t know these players as well as most presidents know their players,” Harris said earlier this month at the GM Meetings in Las Vegas. There are other factors that must be weighed by Harris: The Tigers like Cisnero, but he’ll turn 34 in April. LAKELAND, Fla. -- The Detroit Tigers reached deals with seven arbitration-eligible players but appear ready to “go to trial” with injured starting pitcher Spencer Turnbull. Players eligible for arbitration have spent between three and six years on an MLB active roster. In most cases, players and clubs reach a deal on their own without having to resort to arbitration. The Tigers and Turnbull are allowed to continue negotiating up until the arbitration hearing, but the Tigers and many MLB clubs are known for a “file and trial” policy. His 2023 salary will be similar or identical to his 2022 salary, meaning a victory in arbitration could ultimately be worth $1.55 million.

If several players had been in the same situation, the Tigers would have very likely been forced to postpone Monday’s game while they scrambled for roster replacements. The Detroit Tigers have demoted former closer Joe Jimenez to Triple-A Toledo. The move was announced Saturday morning and effectively solidifies the Tigers’ Opening Day pitching staff. RELATED: Tigers’ Opening Day roster set. Jimenez, 26, has pitched parts of four seasons with the Tigers and has been the club’s official or semi-official closer since Shane Greene was traded in 2019. “It was a difficult conversation with Joe and he handled it very professionally, but he was obviously unhappy,” said Tigers manager A.J.

C Wilson RamosConfidence: LockRole: Starting catcherThere’s a legitimate three-way battle to back up Ramos, but everyone knows who the starter will be. AdSS Willi CastroConfidence: LockRole: Starting shortstopThere are going to be some defensive miscues, especially on the throw. As a result, the Tigers will have an extra roster spot to play with -- that’s why there will be 27 names on this list. He bet on himself and won, allowing just three runs while striking out 15 batters in 11 spring innings. If we’re being honest, a conversation about Baddoo as a starter feels more justified than a conversation about earning a roster spot.

Tigers bullpen throws 5 shutout innings and has radar gun sizzling early in spring
The starting pitcher, Spencer Turnbull, really wasn’t bad either. Joe Jimenez, Derek Holland, Jose Cisnero, Gregory Soto and Alex Lange each pitched a scoreless inning in the game. Cisnero struck out two batters in the fifth while sitting at 96 and 97 mph, while Soto struck out the side in the sixth, reaching 98 and 99 mph on the radar gun. But the 31-year-old journeyman was one of the Tigers’ steadiest relievers in 2020, posting a 3.03 ERA with 34 strikeouts in 29 2/3 innings. Turnbull allowed two runs in his two innings of work, but he struck out three and featured a very live fastball for such an early part of spring training.
mlive.comWho are candidates to be Tigers’ closer in 2021? Will they even have one?
LAKELAND, Fla. -- Will Gregory Soto be the Detroit Tigers’ closer? The closer role has seemed somewhat superfluous for the Tigers over the last several years, a distinction that mattered more in fantasy baseball than the real-life variety. Let’s start with Jimenez, 26, who has spent most of his career as Closer of the Future (2017-2018) or actual closer (2019-2020). Obviously, Hinch and the Tigers hope to be better in 2021 than they have been in the previous four seasons. And the actual identify of the Tigers’ closer will matter to few people beyond fantasy baseball owners.

Candelario is now a critical element of the Tigers’ lineup, whether he’s playing first or third or a little bit of both. But he was a steady presence in the Tigers’ bullpen in 2020 and they’d like to see if he can do it again in 2021. If the Tigers opt to keep Rule 5 Draft pick Akil Baddoo (29), Castro’s path to a roster spot will be a lot tighter. After Teheran, the veteran non-roster invitees most likely to win a roster spot are probably Erasmo Ramirez (34) and Derek Holland (35). Fans would love it, but top prospects Spencer Torkelson (66) and Riley Greene (67) aren’t going to make the team.

Detroit Tigers should consider trading pitchers to Yankees for Clint Frazier, Miguel Andujar
On Thursday, the Yankees optioned Miguel Andujar to their alternate training site, where hell join former top prospect Clint Frazier in intrasquad games and workouts. In that full season, Andujar hit 27 home runs and 47 doubles in 149 games with a low strikeout rate and a .297/.328/.527 slash line. Detroit Tigers prove superior in comeback win against Kansas City
DETROIT From getting blown out in the home opener to getting two wins in a row against the Kansas City Royals, the Tigers seem to have the better hand getting majority series wins against the Royals. At that point the only run the Tigers were able to get was a sacrifice fly by Jonathan Schoop to put them on the board but still down 4-1. It wasnt until the bottom of the 5th-inning that it was time to tie it up for the home team. Hes been swinging a good, short swing and on the whole field driving the baseball.
