Parent files lawsuit against Manchester schools over enforcement of mask mandate
MANCHESTER, MI - The parent of a Manchester Community Schools student is suing the district, alleging its enforcement of the county health department’s K-12 mask mandate is a violation of his daughter’s constitutional rights. Stewart’s lawsuit alleges Manchester schools engaged in “extreme and dangerous conduct” when district administrators placed students who chose not to wear a mask in the building in a segregated room by themselves. Students were threatened with detention and suspension if they decided not to wear a mask, the lawsuit states. During the mask protest in September, around two dozen students entered Manchester High School without masks in protest of a mask mandate issued by the Washtenaw County Health Department. The Manchester School Board plans to conduct its meetings remotely - at least until the end of the school year.

When they refused, the board made the quick decision to adjourn, Bezeau said . Going forward, Bezeau said Manchester’s School Board plans to conduct its meetings remotely - at least until the end of the school year - with the next meeting scheduled for 7 p.m. Monday, Sept. 27. Located in the southwestern corner of Washtenaw County with an enrollment of about 800 students, Manchester Community Schools had been the only district in the county that made wearing masks optional prior to the health department’s mandate. The district has not had similar issues with students not complying with the mask mandate, Bezeau said.

The students entered the building on Sept. 7, which was the day the health department’s mask mandate for all schools in the county went into effect. While students and parents voiced their displeasure with school officials outside the building Tuesday, Manchester Superintendent Brad Bezeau said the students without mask were allowed to enter the building. YPSILANTI, MI - Children in all of Washtenaw County’s K-12 schools are being required to wear masks indoors, according to an order from the Washtenaw County Health Department. Washtenaw County recently moved into a “high” rate of COVID-19 transmission. Manchester Community Schools, which currently makes mask wearing optional, indicated earlier this week it would comply with any mask mandate the county issues. The order applies to public, private, vocational and charter schools that provide pre-K-12 classes in Washtenaw County, as well as any affiliated extracurricular activities or athletics. The mask order does not apply to:Those actively eating or drinking, swimming or diving or who are alone in a room.

According to a recent survey of educators by Michigan Education Association, only 25.6% of respondents in Washtenaw County had received at least the first dose of the COVID-19 vaccine. WSA represents the superintendents of the Washtenaw Intermediate School District and the following nine public school districts: Ann Arbor Public Schools; Chelsea School District; Dexter Community Schools; Lincoln Consolidated Schools; Manchester Community Schools; Milan Area Schools; Saline Area Schools; Whitmore Lake Public Schools and Ypsilanti Community Schools.
