American racer Colton Herta was announced Saturday as a test driver for Formula One team McLaren as part of its 2022 program. FLINT, MI -- A federal judge overseeing a massive proposed partial settlement of civil lawsuits tied to the Flint water crisis will allow McLaren Regional Medical Center to contribute $15 million less than it originally agreed to. U.S. District Court Judge Judith E. Levy ruled Wednesday, Oct. 20, that McLaren will be allowed to contribute $5 million to the settlement fund rather than $20 million despite the Flint City Council’s refusal to agree to the change. “The Flint defendants’ position reflects a misinterpretation of the (settlement) and of Michigan contract law,” the judge wrote in her 24-page opinion and order. And in exercising their duties under the (settlement), including when modifying (it), they must act in good faith, and not unreasonably withhold consent,” Levy’s order says. Because Flint is one of four defendants that agreed to settle water crisis lawsuits in exchange for contributions to the settlement fund, its consent was required for McLaren to contribute less than originally agreed to. Other council members who have been skeptical of the settlement, said McLaren -- like other defendants in the lawsuits -- isn’t paying enough. If it decides not to take part in the settlement, McLaren will not be alone. By settling, the state, city, and Rowe are avoiding any of the pending cases against them and their employees in state and federal court from going to trial. FLINT, MI -- The Flint City Council has agreed to allow McLaren Regional Medical Center to drop its contribution to a settlement fund tied to the Flint water crisis from $20 million to $5 million because only “a handful” of those who sued the hospital have agreed to settle their cases. Santino Guerra (Ward 3), Kate Fields (Ward 4), Charles Winfrey (Ward 6), Allan Griggs (Ward 8), and Eva Worthing (Ward 9) approved the change. Eric Mays (Ward 1), Maurice Davis (Ward 2), Jerri Winfrey-Carter (Ward 5), and Monica Galloway (Ward 7) were opposed. FLINT, MI -- Parties to a landmark $641-million settlement of pending lawsuits related to the Flint water crisis are discussing a modification that would allow McLaren Regional Medical Center to get a partial refund on the $20 million it’s contributed to the deal. In April, attorney Geoffrey Fieger said 25 clients with pending water crisis lawsuits wouldn’t be “strong-armed” into dropping their cases against McLaren and joining in the settlement, preferring to litigate the cases in court rather than taking a piece of the settlement pool. If there is a modification of the settlement agreement, Greenspan said, the Flint City Council would be required to vote on the change. In December, a divided council agreed for the city to join in the settlement with McLaren, the state of Michigan, and Rowe Professional Services. DETROIT – On Oct. 6, McLaren Oakland notified 2,219 current and former patients of a potential compromise of their personal data on a hospital computer. On July 10, 2020, representatives from McLaren Oakland became aware of a computer desktop file containing an unauthorized and unsecured link to a file containing patients' protected health information. Following an investigation, McLaren Oakland officials have discovered that the link was inadvertently rendered insecure by an employee, and that there is no evidence of fraudulent or criminal activity related to this incident. The Department of Health and Human Services, Office of Civil Rights has been notified of the incident, and McLaren Oakland will cooperate with the Office in its review. The notification letter includes details on identity theft monitoring and protection services offered through McLaren, free of charge.
