Tigers’ Daniel Norris getting another crack at free agency
Round 2 of free agency is approaching for left-handed pitcher Daniel Norris. Norris, 29, has now pitched in parts of eight seasons for the Tigers, who dealt him to the Brewers at the deadline in 2021. Norris and catcher Tucker Barnhart are the only two players on the Tigers’ big-league roster reaching free agency of their own accord, although several others could be cut loose in the next six weeks. Outfielder Robbie Grossman (traded) and right-handed pitcher Michael Pineda (released) would also be in line for traditional free agency if they were still around. For the Tigers, Norris started, worked as a long reliever and even performed some situational lefty duties.
mlive.comTigers say so long to another free-agent starting pitcher who didn’t work out
DETROIT -- The Detroit Tigers will officially say farewell to veteran starting pitcher Michael Pineda on Monday. Hinch said the 32-year-old right-hander would be designated for assignment as the Tigers start to get looks at other pitchers in the final month of the 2022 season. Pineda represents the Tigers’ latest failed foray into the free-agent market for veteran starting pitchers signed to one-year deals. And compared to, say, Julio Teheran, who the Tigers paid $5 million to make one start in 2021, Pineda does seem like a bargain. Right-hander Matt Manning (1-2, 3.86) is likely to start Friday’s series opener in Kansas City against the Royals.

mlive.comTigers’ roster expands by 2 spots next week. Will Tork get one of them?
So the Tigers won’t have to do any heavy-duty roster maneuvering when the rosters expand in one week. One of the moves is already preordained: Michael Pineda will return to the starting rotation, assuming his final rehab start with Triple-A Toledo goes well on Sunday. “I don’t think he’s in a rut in Triple-A,” Hinch said. “I think he’s in a rut in 2022, just overall.
