SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. -- If professional football doesn’t work out for Mike Morris, or even if it does, there’s always a career acting. He appeared in school plays in high school. Sometime after Michigan beat Michigan State on Oct. 29, Morris filmed a television commercial for the Mike Morse Law Firm. Mike Morris, who was named Big Ten defensive lineman of the year earlier this month for his 7 1/2-sack season, plans to suit up for Saturday’s Fiesta Bowl matchup against Texas Christian (4 p.m., ESPN) after rehabbing a nagging high-ankle sprain. “I’m probably 95 to 100 (percent) right now,” Morris told reporters Wednesday. Last year, under previous coordinator Mike Macdonald, Morris was deployed in various roles across the defensive line. “When I first met Mike, nobody had higher expectations for Mike than Mike. We need you to be Mike Morris, because you’re a really good player capable of being this type of player.
mlive.comReceivers limited, position switch in Michigan’s first Fiesta Bowl practice
TEMPE, Ariz. — Michigan football could be without a trio of receivers for the Fiesta Bowl later this week. All three players were present at Diablo Stadium in Tempe for practice, but were not in pads or going through pre-practice warmups during the portion open to the media. Henning, who doubles as Michigan’s punt returner, has been used sparingly at wideout this season, catching just seven passes for 63 yards. Michigan (13-0) will practice again on Wednesday and Thursday, with Thursday’s session open to the media once again. Michigan is thin at inside linebacker, and the 6-foot, 223-pound Moten could give the team some depth at the position.

mlive.comMichigan injury report: Can Donovan Edwards shake off cast vs. Purdue?
ANN ARBOR, Mich. — As Michigan gets ready to depart for Indianapolis, health of the team remains a big storyline. It limited him early on, slowing Michigan’s ground attack, but Edwards powered through en route to a 22-carry, 216-rushing yards, 2-TD game in the victory. Unless he suffered additional damage to that thumb, we expect Edwards to play again. But that’s also why they play the games — Michigan showed last week that it could win games through the air. LS William Wagner — We don’t have the particulars on this one, but Michigan’s top long snapper also suffered a season-ending injury against Iowa.

‘No update’ on Blake Corum, injured Michigan players ahead of Ohio State
ANN ARBOR, Mich. — If you were holding your breath for an update on Michigan’s group of banged up players, exhale. Head coach Jim Harbaugh provided “no update” on the status of star running back Blake Corum, backup Donovan Edwards and starting tight end Luke Schoonmaker ahead of Saturday’s showdown with Ohio State (Noon, FOX). The response is not a surprise for anyone that follows Harbaugh and the Michigan football program. Even so, the injury to Corum appears significant. He, too, was in uniform for the game against Illinois but never played after coming up injured the week prior.
mlive.comMichigan football hits late field goal against Illinois to improve to 11-0 for first time since 2006

He also overshot Andrel Anthony on a corner fade in the third quarter that led to a Jake Moody field goal instead of a first down.
mlive.comMichigan football missing three key players vs. Illinois
ANN ARBOR, Mich. — Michigan will be without three key players on offense today, leaving it shorthanded for its second-to-last regular season game. Starting offensive lineman Trevor Keegan will be sidelined for a second straight game due to injury, while backup running back Donovan Edwards and return man A.J. Edwards never played in the second half of last week’s win over Nebraska, after starting the game and getting carries early. He is second on the team in catches (30) and receiving yards (315), and could prove to be vital against Illinois’ No. NOTES: Illinois running back Chase Brown, injured in Illinois’ loss to Purdue last week, is “full go” today, according to ESPN.

mlive.comMichigan football injury report, keys to victory vs. Illinois
A victory on Saturday would assuredly keep the Wolverines in the College Football Playoff hunt, one week before the showdown in Columbus. OL Trente Jones — Michigan’s starting right tackle returned from a high-ankle sprain last week, albeit in a limited, reserve role. That suggests Edwards, who’s been banged up throughout his two-year career at Michigan, may have re-aggravated a previous injury. TE Erick All — Michigan’s starting tight end had “life-changing” season-ending surgery during the bye week, ruling him out for the rest of the season. He’s working his way back from a lower leg injury, which may slow him, but it’ll be vital that the Michigan defense keeps the running lanes blocked and tackles well.
mlive.comBlake Corum aims to continue Heisman push vs. stingy Illinois defense
But it’s Michigan’s Blake Corum, who is fourth nationally in rushing yards (1,349) and second in rushing touchdowns (17), who Heisman voters will be watching closely Saturday. The standout junior is coming off his seventh-straight 100-yard rushing game and has been one of college football’s most scintillating players in 2022. Michigan’s offensive game plan has centered around Corum during Big Ten play, and the 5-foot-8, 210-pounder has delivered. “I was thinking about that,” Morris said on the “Inside Michigan Football” radio show. “Blake doesn’t really like talking about it,” Morris said of the Heisman race.
mlive.comMichigan EDGE Mike Morris says he’s OK after ‘tweak’ vs. Nebraska
ANN ARBOR, Mich. — It’s that time of the season where the injuries pile up, and Michigan sure is experiencing it. While the jury is still out on whether tight end Luke Schoonmaker and running back Donovan Edwards play on Saturday, starting edge rusher Mike Morris said Monday night that he’ll “be all right” after leaving last weekend’s win over Nebraska with an injury. “I’m feeling great,” Morris said Monday night on the “Inside Michigan Football” radio show. Injured players are typically hidden during recovery, and not brought out publicly, suggesting Michigan’s star edge rusher could suit up this weekend. But before Michigan can play that game, they’ve got one more, this weekend inside Michigan Stadium as part of senior day.

mlive.com‘Twitter fingers’ sparked halftime jawing between Michigan-Penn State
ANN ARBOR, MI -- Michigan defensive lineman Mike Morris knew there would be tension between his team and Penn State heading into Saturday’s game. The first was a 62-yard scramble right up the middle of the Michigan defense by Penn State quarterback Sean Clifford. Those two plays gave Penn State their only touchdowns of the day. Michigan finished the game outscoring Penn State, 25-3, cruising to a 41-17 victory. Their next game is Oct. 29 at Michigan Stadium when they host in-state rival, Michigan State.

IOWA CITY, Iowa — You’d have a hard time faulting Mike Morris for being short with his responses, or even saying no to a media interview request. Michigan carried a 13-0 lead into the half, and there was a feeling the gap could have been larger. But after taking a 20-0 lead in the third quarter on a 12-yard touchdown pass to Donovan Edwards, Kirk Ferentz’s team hit the gas. “They had us on our heels there.”A 13-play, 78-yard drive moved Iowa into the Michigan red zone, threatening to pull within a touchdown and flip momentum. “Coach (Mike) Elston has made it a big priority to help us in the pass-rush game,” Morris said.

IOWA CITY, Iowa — Another test, another passing grade for this Michigan football team. The victory, a first for the Wolverines in four attempts in Iowa City, improves their record to 5-0. But a second-half flurry by Iowa, which entered Saturday’s game with one of the worst offenses statistically, tried to close the gap. The Hawkeyes entered Saturday’s game allowing just 5.8 yards and 236.3 yards per game. Michigan will hit the road for a second straight week next Saturday, traveling to Bloomington to play Indiana (Noon, FOX).

mlive.comWith chip on shoulder, Michigan’s defense delivers in opener
ANN ARBOR – Michigan’s players were cognizant of the public perception of the team’s defense heading into 2022. The defense responded by holding the Rams to 219 yards of offense and not allowing point until midway through the fourth quarter of a 51-7 win. Only four came from defensive linemen, but their pressure also helped create lanes to the quarterback for linebackers and defensive backs. “I’m just excited for the defense,” said sophomore linebacker Junior Colson, who had a team-high 10 tackles. He wants to be the new leader of the group and says he’s ready to shoulder the spotlight. He wanted to add weight so he can play comfortably at all four levels of Michigan’s defensive line. Harbaugh believes Michigan’s “no-star” defense could be just as good as last year, if not better, even without an every-down anchor like Hutchinson on the outside. “Mike’s getting real comfortable on the edge, and understanding what his strengths are,” first-year defensive line coach Mike Elston said in spring.
