DETROIT – The Detroit Red Wings turned in a strong effort Saturday against one of the top teams in the league but ran out of steam near the end. The Toronto Maple Leafs scored five unanswered goals in the third period and defeated Detroit 7-4 at Little Caesars Arena. Dylan Larkin had two goals and an assist for the Red Wings (19-20-6), who also got goals from Vladislav Namestnikov and Tyler Bertuzzi. Michael Bunting recorded his second career hat trick for the Maple Leafs, who have won five in a row from the Red Wings. This was Jeff Blashill’s 500th game as Red Wings coach.

Andrei Svechnikov, Nino Neiderreiter, Martin Necas, Brock McGinn and Teuvo Teravainen also scored to help the Hurricanes win their third straight, all at home. The teams were tied 1-1 after 20 minutes before Aho scored twice in Carolinas four-goal second period. Manthas power-play goal pulled Detroit to 3-2 at 8:02, but Necas restored Carolinas two-goal lead just 26 seconds later. Aho made it 5-2 with his fifth with 8:57 left, and Bertuzzi pulled the Red Wings back within two a little more than five minutes later.
