MOUNT CLEMENS, MI — “Egregious” deeds led a former Macomb County Prosecutor, Eric Smith, to receive a sentence of 21 months in prison this week, the Associated Press reported. Smith in January pleaded guilty to a federal felony count of obstruction of justice related to a corruption probe that concluded last year. Smith’s deeds in these cases are egregious,” U.S. District Judge Linda Parker said during Smith’s sentencing Wednesday, Feb. 16, the AP reported. The plea deal ensured Smith wouldn’t face further prosecution related to the year-long investigation that exposed the crimes. A former federal prosecutor who worked out of the U.S. District Court Eastern District of Michigan in Detroit has had her law license suspended for misrepresenting information in a biker gang case from 2007. The Michigan Attorney Discipline Board issued a notice, Dec. 31, announcing the suspension of Diane L. Marion, of Belleville, who is now barred from practicing law in the state for one year following an investigation by the board.

Washtenaw County Prosecutor Eli Savit scraps cash bail

ANN ARBOR – Washtenaw County Prosecutor Eli Savit announced Monday that the Prosecutor’s Office will eliminate the use of cash bail in any case. Savit, who took office on Jan. 1, alerted staff Monday morning in a 20-page policy directive. The move has made Washtenaw County the first jurisdiction in the state to eliminate cash bail. Washington, D.C. and New Jersey have stopped seeking cash bail, as well as the city of San Francisco and counties in Vermont and Virginia. According to the directive, cash bail places poorer people at risk of losing their jobs, homes and can place serious harm on children of defendants.
