Michigan sees record number of COVID-19 patients in hospitals already at breaking point

There were 4,674 confirmed cases as of Monday. The previous record, set in December, was about 4,560 confirmed cases, according to the state’s weekly data and modeling update. RELATED: Feds sending staffing assistance to fifth Michigan hospital during latest case surgeAs of Monday, 539 patients were on ventilators and 857 patients were in intensive care. In mid-December, when Michigan hospitals were treating a then-record 4,782 patients with confirmed or suspected cases of COVID-19, 1,033 of them were in intensive care and 638 on ventilators. Doctors have continually said most of the patients in the hospitals with COVID-19 are unvaccinated, though the percentage has dropped.

Ypsilanti student dies after experiencing medical emergency at basketball tryouts

YPSILANTI - An Ypsilanti student died Monday after experiencing a medical emergency during high school boys basketball tryouts. Ypsilanti Community Schools confirmed to MLive on Tuesday afternoon that Jaylen Mitchell was rushed to St. Joseph Mercy Hospital following the incident and he received immediate medical attention but ultimately died at the hospital. Mitchell was a senior at YCHS Stemm Middle College and was well-liked by those in the community, the press release said. YCS also encourages the community to utilize other valuable resources available.”Boys basketball tryouts and practices for high school teams across the state of Michigan began on Monday. It is unclear how the Ypsilanti basketball program will move forward at this time.

His passenger, a 32-year-old Westland woman, was not wearing a seatbelt and suffered serious injuries in the crash, officials said. Oakley was not injured in the crash, officials said. The felony charges were authorized May 24 after the University of Michigan Division of Public Safety and Security completed its investigation.

St. Joseph Mercy Hospital Ann Arbor nears capacity as Michigan sees COVID-19 hospitalizations rise

ANN ARBOR, MI -- Hospitalizations for COVID-19 are rising significantly in Michigan, and St. Joseph Mercy Hospital in Ann Arbor is among the hospitals nearing capacity. As of Monday, April 5, St. Joe’s was at 99% capacity, according to the state. Hospital officials said there were 81 COVID-19 positive patients on Wednesday morning, April 7. St. Joe’s in Ann Arbor is one of 16 hospitals with more than 90% capacity, according to the state. Throughout the state, 11.9% of in-patient hospital beds are being used to treat COVID-19 patients -- an increase of 203% since Feb. 28.

Woman killed in 5-vehicle crash on I-94 near Ypsilanti

YPSILANTI TWP., MI – A woman was killed Saturday afternoon when she was rear ended in a five-vehicle crash on I-94 near Ypsilanti, police say. Emergency crews were called at 3:01 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 24, to eastbound I-94 at the Huron Street exit, 183, for a reported multi-vehicle crash, according to the Michigan State Police. The at-fault driver rear-ended a woman on I-94, spurring a short chain of crashes involving five vehicles and injuring both her and the driver, police said. The woman was taken St. Joseph Mercy Hospital in Ann Arbor where she later died, police said. The area was reopened at 8:30 p.m.Michigan State Police did not immediately release any information about the crash over the weekend.

Man remains in hospital after found along River Raisin

The man was found with a stabbing wound, the incident remains under investigation. A 50-year-old Dundee man was in critical but stable condition Wednesday at St. Joseph Mercy Hospital in Ann Arbor after he was found with a stabbing wound along the River Raisin in Dundee Friday morning. Dundee Police Chief Tim Garbo said a Clarkston man walking his dog found the victim about 11 a. m. Friday lying along the river and called 911. The man was found about two homes east of the Dundee Police Department. Dundee volunteer firefighters were called to the scene and the man was taken by Monroe Community Ambulance to the hospital.
