When Katori Hall first pitched the idea to convert her popular play about Black strip club culture into the television series “P-Valley,” the Pulitzer Prize winner was either quickly rejected after meeting with networks or denied before she could fully explain the concept. Hall struggled to find support from some network executives who thought the concept would be exploitative of Black women, in light of the history of casting them in hypersexualized roles on screen. Hall, who is a Black woman, understood they wanted to avoid any backlash, but her overall vision was focused on humanizing exotic dancers — which Starz heard with “open ears.”

mlive.comWhy Starz is betting Netflix, Disney+ consumers will pay more for premium streaming
Starz isn't the only long-time cable service hedging its bets with a streaming service that accompanies all-in-one platforms like Netflix. Quibi, the high-profile streaming service backed by entertainment and tech heavyweights that aired short-form videos, shutdown roughly six months after it launched in 2020. There is space for premium services like Starz and Showtime, which already have content libraries, says Needham analyst Laura Martin. The future premium streaming market will likely include a range of one or two million subscriber services appealing to niche viewers, Martin said. Consumers may also subscribe to several premium platforms periodically, although these offerings are unlikely to overtake streaming services like Disney+ or Netflix, she said.
cnbc.comStarz app sees 142% spike in subscribers, CEO doesn't expect coronavirus to delay new releases
Starz has seen a spike in viewership and new sign-ups in the wake of social distancing restrictions in the U.S., Starz CEO Jeff Hirsch said Thursday on CNBC's "The Exchange." Shares of Lionsgate, the parent company of Starz, have risen more than 40% in the last month, in part because of the success of Starz. The Starz app has seen a 44% jump in average viewership since people have been forced to stay home due to the outbreak. The app, which usually costs $9 a month, is currently discounted to $5 a month for three months. So, it's really the portfolio approach of content that keeps consumers on the service coming back week after week after week."

Comcast and Lions Gate, the owner of Starz, have both been contacted by the Department of Justice as part of an informal inquiry into two companies' contract negotiations, according to people familiar with the matter. The New York Post was first to report on the informal inquiry, adding that no subpoenas or requests for discovery have been issued. Oct. 16, Lions Gate warned Comcast Xfinity customers that they may lose access to Starz amid the contract dispute. Lions Gate shares have plunged 49% this year, including dipping more than 9% since the company notified Comcast customers of the potential cutoff last month. "I encourage both of you to seek a win-win solution and consider all options to keep STARZ programming on the air," Feinstein wrote.
