Capitol security review recommends sweeping changes after riot

House lawmakers on Monday were briefed on a new security review that recommends widespread changes at the U.S. Capitol following the January 6 insurrection. The 15-page document seeks to streamline the chain of command after significant delays in deploying the National Guard during the riot. It proposes giving the U.S. Capitol Police authority to request support from the National Guard and outside law enforcement without preapproval from the Capitol Police Board in "extraordinary emergency circumstances". Pelosi commissioned the Honore review, which primarily focuses on security on the House side of the Capitol. Honore and other members of the January 6 task force will brief members from both parties in three separate sessions Monday.

Should guns be allowed in Michigan Capitol building?

In Michigan, concealed and open carry firearms are allowed in the Capitol, but signs have been banned since 2012 after right-to-work protesters came to the Capitol. According to the Capitol Commission, tours alone bring in 115,000 people a year, not including those who work or visit to participate in the affairs of the Capitol. Incoming House Speaker Jason Wentworth hasn't moved far from his stance from November when he said he was looking forward to what the Capitol Commission would do. Rep. Sarah Anthony, a Lansing Democrat, has pleaded with the Capitol Commission to act to prevent possible violence. On Thursday, the morning after the events in the nation's Capital, state police say there was a bomb threat made to the state Capitol.

Senators will leave Washington until April 20 but the coronavirus crisis could force them to return

Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell said the chamber would adjourn for nearly a month after it passed a historically huge $2 trillion coronavirus relief package late Wednesday night. But as the outbreak takes a toll on American health and financial well-being, the unprecedented crisis may force Congress to act again sooner than the Senate's planned return date of April 20. "If circumstances require the Senate to return for a vote sooner than April the 20th, we will provide at least 24 hours of notice," he said. It also allocates more funding for hospitals, states and municipalities, and requires insurers to cover coronavirus preventive services with no cost-sharing. "I think the odds are we will need new legislation, more legislation after this," Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer said after the vote.
