Detroit Red Wings general manager Steve Yzerman made a huge splash on trade deadline day Monday, sending Anthony Mantha to the Washington Capitals for forwards Jakub Vrana and Richard Panik, a first-round pick in 2021 and a second-round selection in 2022. The Red Wings selected Mantha (6-5, 234) 20th overall in 2013. Vrana, 25, in the key player the Red Wings received in return. Vrana (6-0, 197) was selected 13th overall in 2014, two spots before the Red Wings took Dylan Larkin, who might be his new linemate. The Red Wings now have two first-round picks this year, their own and Washington’s, and 12 selections overall, including three in the second round and two each in the third, fourth and fifth rounds.

DETROIT (AP) Alex Ovechkin wont be returning the few hats that hit the ice in Detroit, even if hes had more impressive three-goal games. A hat trick is a hat trick, he said. It was his 24th regular season hat trick, passing Jari Kurri for 10th on the NHLs career list. Ovechkin put a shot in off goalie Jonathan Bernier from the bottom of the left circle after swooping behind the net. I got lucky, because I should have gone to my backhand, but I went behind the net instead, Ovechkin said.
