DETROIT - What started as a lesson about ancient Greece is now an investigation into a Detroit Renaissance High School teacher's comments to his class. Parents said this was a world history class and students were learning about the Helots of Sparta, an enslaved class of people. "He adds on, after they learn about the Helots, you're all Helots,'" Jamon Jordan said. "He tells the students they're Helots, and my child, my son Joshua, states Are you saying we're slaves?' And the teacher without pausing says, Yeah, you're slaves.

It's a question many concerned residents have asked on social media Tuesday morning and as of 10:44 a.m. their suspicions were confirmed. That's when the Washtenaw County Sheriff's Office released the following advisory:"Due to a large fire at a metal scrapyard in northwest Ohio, Washtenaw County residents may experience the smell of smoke of various plastic type odorants throughout the day today. Public Safety Officials on scene of the fire have advised that there are no major concerns regarding air quality, and no further action is required." On the Washtenaw County Sheriff Office's notification site, residents of Milan, Novi, Northville, Clarkston and Oxford also reported smelling the odor. As of Monday night, it was reported that up to 35 fire crews were battling the blaze at MetalX in Delta, Ohio.

DETROIT - What started with an off-duty police officer being carjacked in Detroit early Tuesday morning ended in southwest Detroit with one of the three suspects surrendering to officials. The situation began before 3 a.m. Tuesday at a BP gas station on Fort Street near Clark Avenue in Detroit. An off-duty Harper Woods police officer was carjacked at a gas station early Tuesday morning. Police arrested one suspect later Tuesday after a short pursuit and the stolen truck crashed in Melvindale. While investigating the carjacking, a surveillance unit spotted a suspect vehicle and the suspects they were seeking.
