The Tigers’ strikeout rate (27.2 percent) is still the highest in baseball, as it was in 2019 and 2020. As Tigers revamp roster with flurry of moves, Beau Burrows, Wilson Ramos are casualties
When the Detroit Tigers dropped pitcher Beau Burrows from the roster as part of a flurry of moves earlier this week, the only surprise was that it had taken this long. It’s rare that the Tigers show such an aversion to a first-round draft pick, especially a homegrown one. In 2018, the Tigers even re-signed a former first-round pick, Jacob Turner, and gave him another look six years after he was traded. And let’s not forget that Avila has kept Burrows on the 40-man roster for exactly 573 days. In fact, Del Pozo has already been optioned back to Toledo, although he remains on the 40-man roster.mlive.com

Tigers mailbag: Have 2 new catchers helped spark team’s surge?
But it hasn’t escaped notice that a significant change at one position has roughly coincided with the Tigers’ late-May hot streak. Q: Do Haase and Rogers really represent that big of an upgrade over Ramos and Greiner? Ultimately I think Ramos can still be useful as a designated hitter, pinch-hitter and, yes, a backup or third catcher. Q: Who will the Tigers use later in the summer when Mize and Skubal hit their innings limits?
