The Associated Press is seeking answers from the Department of Homeland Security on its use of sensitive government databases for tracking international terrorists to investigate as many as 20 American journalists, including an acclaimed AP reporter.
DPD launches investigation into officers use of a chokehold on protester
DETROIT Police announced Sunday they have launched an investigation into the use of a choke hold on a protester. The investigation was in response of a photo of Detroit Will Breathe organizer Nakia Wallace being restrained with a chokehold Friday. Three officers took me to the ground and after I was already on the ground one, of them put me in a choke hold, Wallace recalled. William Meeko Williams was arrested for allegedly assaulting an officer. The organization will hold a protest Monday outside the Detroit Detention Center to continue to call for his release.
DPD investigating misconduct complaints after journalists report being shot with rubber bullets
DETROIT With police brutality protests continued, Detroit police are investigating how some officers handled protesters early on. There have been misconduct complaints and charges are on the horizon within the department. MLive reported its staff photographer Nicole Hester was among three journalists hit by pellets fired by Detroit police during a George Floyd protest. Detroit Police District 5 commissioner Willie Burton has been pushing for changes to DPDs use of force policies. The use of force that were applied to innocent protestors, I am outraged as a police commissioner in the city of Detroit, Burton said.

The suspension comes amid an investigation involving a MLive journalist who was targeted while covering protests against police brutality. DETROIT Detroit Mayor Mike Duggan apologized to local journalists who were targeted by police while covering George Floyd protests. Mark Kurlyandchik, restaurant critic and dining reporter for the Detroit Free Press, recounted his experience Sunday with police on Twitter. Free Press reporter JC Reindl was chased down by a Detroit police officer during a protest Saturday. He praised Metro Detroit journalists for the work they have been doing covering the protests. Despite Mondays apology, on Tuesday night Detroit Free Press reporter, Darcie Moran, was handcuffed until one officer noticed her media badge and let her go.
