Michigan State Police said there was a "major asphalt spill" Friday morning on eastbound I-96 near Kensington Lake Road.

A truck overturned, losing its load of hot asphalt across the eastbound I-96 lanes.

"A semi hauling hot asphalt overturned and has covered the freeway with the asphalt," a statement from state police reads. "There is hot asphalt in all lanes. Eastbound traffic is rerouted at Kensington Lake and then back on at Kent Lake."

The eastbound side of the interstate was shut down at US-23. It is back open to traffic.

Traffic was being routed off the interstate at Kensington Lake Road and then back on at Kent Lake Road, where the interstate was down to one lane.

Crews up-righted the truck and cleared debris from the eastbound lanes.

Traffic is moving again.
