Detroit's 'Occupy the Summer' plan aims to curb youth violence with late-night rec centers, mentors
Detroit city leaders have launched “Occupy the Summer,” a safety initiative aimed at keeping youth engaged and safe during the summer through extended recreation center hours, midnight basketball, and weekly public events. The program, shaped by input from teens and community members, emphasizes mentorship, positive role models, and parental involvement to counteract rising violence as the school year ends. Activities include sports, fitness, e-sports, and performances by local and national artists. Registration is open, with events officially starting June 12.
