Going up to 28 mph, e-bikes are sending more Michigan kids to the hospital

E-bike use has increased significantly in recent years, leading to a rise in related injuries, particularly among children. Doctors and safety experts at Corewell Health Children’s are warning parents about the risks, noting that injuries from e-bike accidents -- such as concussions and internal trauma -- are often more severe than those from traditional bikes due to higher speeds and heavier frames. They recommend that children have strong biking skills, sound judgment, and always wear high-quality helmets, while also emphasizing Michigan’s age restrictions for faster e-bikes. Corewell Health is distributing a checklist to help families determine if their child is ready for an e-bike, aiming to improve safety and prevent injuries.
