Metro Detroit weather: Brisk Opening Day with light snow possible

Highs in upper, mid 30s Thursday

Good Thursday morning!

This week marks the confluence of three religious holidays: Passover (already in progress), Good Friday and Easter this weekend and Detroit Tigers Opening Day Thursday. Last year, of course, Opening Day didn’t happen until July due to the pandemic -- and I stood out there at Comerica Park on a steamy morning with temperatures near 70 degrees. This year, you’ll see me out there on the coldest day in over two weeks!

Thursday’s sunrise is at 7:15 a.m.

Although we’ll see some sunshine early Thursday, skies should become mostly cloudy and some flurries and light snow showers are possible, with the best coverage being across the Thumb. Highs will only be in the mid to upper 30s, but a north-northwest wind at 15 to 20 mph will keep wind chills well down in the 20s. Brrrrr! But play ball!

Thursday’s sunset is at 7:59 p.m.

Skies rapidly clear Thursday evening and will be clear the rest of the night. Lows will drop into the low 20s, with lower temps in our typically colder rural areas away from the “heat island.”

We end the work week with some very good weather on Good Friday! Expect wall-to-wall sunshine with highs rebounding into the mid to upper 40s, and the wind dropping to under 10 mph.

It will become mostly cloudy overnight Friday, with lows near 30 degrees.

Easter weekend forecast

Easter weekend looks fantastic. Clouds on Saturday morning will give way to afternoon sunshine, and highs will surge back into the upper 50s to near 60 degrees.

It will be partly cloudy Saturday night, with lows near 40 degrees.

It will also be partly cloudy on Easter Sunday. It’ll be full steam ahead for that socially distant Easter egg hunt on Sunday, with afternoon highs reaching the mid to upper 60s.

By the way, in case you’re wondering just how long the warm weather will last this time, I do not see a single high temperature below 60 degrees all next week!
