Colder temps moving into Metro Detroit to start 2024

New Year’s Day will bring mostly cloudy and cooler conditions

Southeast Michigan is getting rain and snow showers as people celebrate the new year.

The low-pressure system, which is responsible for the messy weather, is moving through the Great Lakes region and heading toward the Mid-Atlantic for New Year’s Day.

Monday

New Year’s Day will bring mostly cloudy and cooler conditions. It will mainly be dry, but flurries will be possible in the Thumb. Highs will be in the mid 30s as a cooler air mass moves over the area. Northerly winds will be 6 to 12 mph. The normal high for New Year’s Day is 34 degrees.

Monday night will be partly cloudy. Lows will be in the mid 20s.

Tuesday

Then, Metro Detroit will feel the effect of a high-pressure system for Tuesday. Expect mostly sunny to partly cloudy skies. Highs will be around 40 degrees.

Wednesday

A cold front will sweep across the state Wednesday. It will be cloudy with the chance of snow showers in the evening and night. Low will be in the mid 20s.

Temperatures are likely to stay in the 30s and near normal for the rest of the week. Overall, Michigan has a good chance of being warmer than normal in January, according to the Climate Prediction Center.
