Significant winter weather expected next week in Metro Detroit: What to know

System to target region with rain, snow, gusty winds

A storm system will impact the Great Lakes region next week. The system is likely to take a track over the Ohio Valley and bring rain, snow and gusty winds to Southeast Michigan starting late Monday night or before dawn Tuesday. (WDIV)

The chance for light snow continues this weekend ahead of a more impactful system on Tuesday and Wednesday.

The current system is bringing light scattered snow showers to Metro Detroit, which will continue into Sunday. There will also be areas of fog and mist on Saturday night. With temperatures falling to around 30 degrees, slick roads will be a concern. Areas of black ice are possible. Winds will be light and variable. Nationally, people will encounter travel impacts in the Mid-Atlantic and Northeast as the strong low-pressure system delivers rain and snow to the region.

Sunday

Sunday will be cloudy with snow showers in the area, which will mainly occur in the morning and early afternoon. Light accumulations are possible. Highs will be in the mid 30s. Lows will be in the upper 20s. Daytime winds will be out of the west at 5 to 10 mph.

Monday

Monday, it will be mostly cloudy and calm with highs in the upper 30s. Lows will be in the lower 30s.

Michigan fans in Houston for the College Football Playoff National Championship on Monday will face rain and thunderstorms. This will be an issue for travelers and tailgaters. This is the same system which will track toward the Ohio Valley and start impacting Metro Detroit as soon as late Monday night.

Tuesday

In Southeast Michigan, we are likely to have rain, wet snow and gusty winds Tuesday. The rain and snow showers will begin early in the morning. Snow accumulation is possible. We will see a transition to all rain by afternoon with highs around 40 degrees. Lows will be in the lower to mid 30s.

The track of the low-pressure system and temperatures will be factors in how much precipitation communities in Southeast Michigan pick up and what kind. The chance of snow will be greater north and west of Metro Detroit.

Wednesday

Rain, snow, and gusty winds are likely on Wednesday. Winds will be out of the north early and become northwesterly with gusts over 30 mph. Highs will be in the mid to upper 30s. Slick roads will likely be an issue at night as temperatures drop below freezing.

As the system evolves and moves closer, forecasts will become more detailed about the potential impacts.
