4Warn Weather – The heat that is on the way to Metro Detroit is not common for our region, and many people are not accustomed to it. The combination of humidity, daytime heat, and nighttime warmth will lead to stress on the body.
The effects of the heat wave will be particularly pronounced in the urban core, which has more concrete and less natural landscape. Temperatures are often warmer in these heavily developed cities than outlying suburban or rural areas. This is known as the “urban heat island effect.”
What defines a heat wave?
In Southeast Michigan, a heat wave is defined as three or more consecutive days with temperatures of 90 degrees or greater, according to the National Weather Service’s Detroit/Pontiac Forecast Office. The criteria are different in other parts of the country, especially regions which are prone to heat.
Using this criterion for Metro Detroit, the heat wave is forecast to begin Monday when the high temperature could challenge the record. Normal highs are around 80 degrees, and normal lows are around 60 degrees.
4Warn Weather Alerts have been declared for Monday and Tuesday due to the potential of excessive heat and heat indices forecast to reach 100 degrees.
Before the oppressive heat, conditions will be generally pleasant.
Friday Night
Clouds will continue to decrease as skies become clear on this Friday night. Lows will be in the mid 50s. Winds will be out of the northeast at around 5 mph.
Saturday
Saturday, it will be a comfortable mid-June day with seasonable conditions. Under mostly sunny to partly cloudy skies, highs will be around 80 degrees. Light winds will be out of the northeast around 5 mph.
Saturday night, it will be mostly cloudy with lows around 60 degrees. Southeasterly winds will be around 5 mph.
Father’s Day
Is dad or that father figure tired of getting socks and ties for Father’s Day? Consider getting him a fan or something else to stay cool. The heat will bump up. In the morning, it will be mostly cloudy. During the afternoon, it will become partly cloudy. Temperatures will warm into the mid to upper 80s.
Sunday night, it will be partly cloudy with lows in the upper 60s to 70 degrees. A warm front will push through the area and make it much hotter for Monday.
Monday
A 4Warn Weather Alert has been declared. It is going to be mostly sunny with a stray shower possible on Monday, but it may be a welcomed sight for the few who experience it. Temperatures will surge into record territory with highs in the mid to upper 90s. The record high for June 17 is 99 degrees (1994). When the humidity is taken into account, it will feel like it is around 100 degrees. Under partly cloudy skies, the nighttime weather will offer little relief with lows in the lower 70s.
Tuesday
A 4Warn Weather Alert has been declared. Tuesday, it will be mostly sunny and hot. A couple of rain showers are possible. Highs will push into the mid 90s. At night, it will be mostly cloudy with lows in the lower to mid 70s.
Juneteenth
The heat wave will continue with the chance of a spotty shower on Wednesday, which is Juneteenth. Highs will return to the mid 90s and easily reach Metro Airport’s current record high of 95 degrees for the date. Overnight lows will only fall to the lower 70s beneath mostly cloudy skies.
Thursday
It will be sweltering on Thursday, which is the first day of astronomical summer. As we see temperatures in the mid 90s and flirting with the record high of 97 degrees, skies will be partly cloudy. Isolated showers are also possible. The summer solstice will occur at 4:50 p.m. On the longest day of the year, or the day with the most daylight, the sun will set at 9:13 p.m. at Metro Airport. At night, it will be partly cloudy with lows in the lower 70s.
Friday
Friday’s weather is forecast to be a carbon copy of Thursday’s conditions.
