Severe weather threats move into Metro Detroit and Southeast Michigan
4Warn Weather – A warm front continues to lift through Lower Michigan. It is ushering in heat and more moisture into Southeast Michigan.
Scattered thunderstorms could produce downpours and gusty winds as they move east at 25 to 40 mph Friday evening.
A storm could pop up anywhere in Southeast Michigan, but the better chance will be north of M-59. Localized street flooding will be possible, especially near and north of I-69.
Southeast Michigan is under a marginal (level one of five) risk for severe weather through Friday evening. Everyone should stay alert as conditions could change.
After the showers and thunderstorms pass, skies will remain mostly cloudy. Lows will be around 70 degrees.
Saturday’s key hazards and storm timing: What to expect
A 4Warn Weather Alert is declared for Saturday
Saturday’s outlook is even more unsettled: Storms may begin to fire up in the late afternoon, become widespread around dinnertime, and the severe threat is forecast to end by 10 p.m.
The severe weather risk ramps up due to an approaching cold front, which will run into hot, moist air.
All of Southeast Michigan is under a “slight” (level 2 of 5) risk for severe weather. Storms are expected to be widespread late Saturday afternoon through the evening, potentially bringing damaging winds up to 60 mph, small hail, and localized flooding.
An isolated tornado cannot be ruled out. Storm motion is likely to be northeasterly at 25 to 35 mph.
Heat on the way: Temperatures rise into next week
Beyond the storms, Metro Detroit is gearing up for hot and humid conditions.
Highs on Saturday are forecast to be around 90 degrees. The heat index, or “feel-like temperatures,” could approach 100 degrees as humidity builds.
So, it is a good idea to plan ahead for outdoor activities and keep plenty of water handy. Saturday’s lows will be around 70 degrees.
Despite the cold front, temperatures will stay above normal for much of the week.
The 7-day 4Warn Weather forecast shows highs in the mid-90s to around 90 degrees holding steady into next week. Shower and thunderstorm chances return by Thursday and Friday.
