Amazon announces another new Michigan fulfillment center; 1,000 new jobs expected

DETROIT – Amazon.com, Inc. announced Thursday morning plans to open a new fulfillment center in Michigan's Macomb County.

The company said in a news release that when the new Shelby Township site opens in 2018 it will create 1,000 new full-time jobs with benefits. The Shelby Township fulfillment center location remains undisclosed.

"We are proud Amazon has made its home in Macomb,” said Macomb County Executive Mark Hackel in a news release. "The economic advantage of Macomb County has aligned perfectly with the corporate growth strategy of Amazon. This partnership is built upon technological innovation, emerging workforce development, and community prosperity. Together with Amazon, we are bringing a million square foot fulfillment center and 1,000 jobs to Macomb County."

  • 1-million-square-foot fulfillment center
  • 1,000 new jobs
  • Employees will pick, pack and ship large items like household decor, sporting equipment and gardening tools

Amazon said it will now employ more 3,500 people in Michigan with three fulfillment centers and a sortation center in Livonia, Romulus, Brownstown and Shelby Township. The online shopping and shipping company also has a corporate office in Detroit.
