🌭 6 Spots to celebrate National Hot Dog Month!

As many people love grilling up a hot dog on the 4th of July, it is no surprise July is National Hot Dog Month! While Detroit classics like American Coney Island (which is pictured at the top of this Newsletter) are always a great place to go, I wanted to find some hot dog places that were offering up something a bit different. Here’s what I found.

Casa Amado sonoran-style hot dog by bureau detroit (Copyright 2023 by WDIV ClickOnDetroit - All rights reserved.)

Casa Amado Taqueria - 2705 Coolidge Hwy, Berkley, MI 48072

Chef Amado Lopez is an expert at slowly building flavors over time. He’s so good at it in fact, he was a semifinalist for a James Beard Award this year. While the place is known for its tacos, it also has some Mexican-style hot dogs on the menu. Since they took over the old Atomic Dog location in Berkley they added sonorans to their menu. Instead of wrapping the dogs in bacon, as is commonly done, they top them with bacon and other things like chiles, pickled onion, and jalapenos. They have a vegan version as well. UFO Factory in Detroit (Copyright 2023 by WDIV ClickOnDetroit - All rights reserved.)

UFO Factory - 2110 Trumbull, Detroit, MI 48216

This is a really funky place, and their hot dogs match that weird vibe. Options include Bahn Mi, Luau, and Nacho! Basically, they love taking classic flavors and putting them on a dog, making creations that are out of this world. You also have your choice of a beef or vegan dog.

Amar Pizza (Copyright 2023 by WDIV ClickOnDetroit - All rights reserved.)

Amar Pizza - 12195 Joseph Campau Ave, Hamtramck, MI 48212

At Amar Pizza, they combine Bangladeshi flavors with classic American dishes to create some truly unique and delicious dishes. I was first introduced to their pizzas, which I find addicting, but upon looking at their menu I realized they do hot dogs too! Try things like their tandoori hot dog, or amp up the spice with the ghost hot dog. Their original location is in Hamtramck, but they have a second in Troy.

Mercury Burger Bar (Copyright 2023 by WDIV ClickOnDetroit - All rights reserved.)

Mercury Burger Bar - 2163 Michigan Ave, Detroit, MI 48216

While “burger” may be in their name, they have a large selection of hot dogs as well at this Corktown Eatery. Of course, they have the Detroit classic Coney dog, but they also offer a New York-style dog with corned beef, kraut, and spicy mustard. For the full story on Mercury Burger Bar, click here.

Lipuma Coney Island - 621 N Main St, Rochester, MI 48307

Ok, so you can get an excellent coney dog here at this longtime Rochester favorite, but they have 12 different hot dogs on the menu. Pictured above is their Chicago Dog which is done the classic way with a steamed poppy seed bun, tomatoes, sport peppers, onion, neon green relish, a pickle spear, and finished with celery salt, but they also have Texas Dog with coleslaw, BBQ sauce and a pickle spear. They are located right on Paint Creek and you’ll spot it by its beautiful hanging flower baskets, and the incredibly long line that runs out the door. Click here for the full story.

Biercamp in Ann Arbor (Copyright 2023 by WDIV ClickOnDetroit - All rights reserved.)

Biercamp - 1643 S State St, Ann Arbor, MI 48104

Biercamp is an artisan meat shop in Ann Arbor, so as you might expect, they have some pretty fancy dogs. While their specialty seems to be brats (which I always feel are like an elevated hot dog), they do have hot dogs as well, including some stuffed with cheese! They even have a bratwurst sandwich on the menu and you can choose from over 12 different brats. They make everything in-house and have indoor and outdoor seating.
