Downtown Allen Park is about to get a serious makeover. This weekend, the city’s Paint the Park festival returns for its second year, transforming city streets into a sprawling, open-air gallery.
Running August 22-23 from noon to 10 p.m., the citywide event will bring eight new murals to downtown Allen Park, painted live by artists traveling from as far as the Netherlands and South Africa.
“Paint the Park is an amazing initiative in Allen Park where we have 8 murals going up, a citywide activation,” said Michelle Tanguay, chief creative officer for The Mural People.
More than murals
The festival isn’t just about paint. Organizers are packing the weekend with more than 100 vendors, food trucks, bounce houses and the first-ever Slow Roll downriver. Attendees can also grab one of 2,000 free art kits or stop by the arts and crafts tent, while the first 500 visitors will receive free tote bags - customizable on the spot with a huge selection of heat-pressed patches.
The weekend will close out both nights with a large-scale light activation show.
Why it matters
For Tanguay, the event is about more than aesthetics - it’s about civic pride.
“It’s really about transforming Allen Park into a more colorful space so that the community becomes really proud,” Tanguay said during an appearance on Live in the D.
That sense of connection, she said, is what makes muralism special in the first place.
“Art brings people together from all over,” Tanguay said.
Building on last year’s success
After a well-received debut last year, organizers said the community’s enthusiasm helped shape this year’s expanded lineup of artists and activities.
“We’re transforming these spaces into something that everybody’s really proud of,” Tanguay said.
Reflecting on watching the murals come together in real time, Tanguay described the transformation in almost mystical terms.
“Oh, it’s magical. It really is,” she said.
