Ferndale’s little radio station with a big heart

From a front porch to the FM dial, this station is all about community

For National Radio Day, 100.7 Ferndale Radio is celebrating a mission rooted in community and nostalgia for a bygone era of college broadcasting. President and general manager Michelle Mirowski said the station began humbly. “So, it all started on actually my front porch,” she said, recalling how she and her husband - who met doing college radio - decided to apply for an opening FM license. The result, she said, is “like a college radio but without the college,” featuring an eclectic mix of indie rock, jazz and local musicians.

Mirowski credited the station’s home base, Ferndale’s Rust Belt Market, and the surrounding community for the station’s staying power. “I can’t imagine a community radio station, um, being successful in most areas except for like Ferndale’s probably one of the best ones,” she said, during an appearance on Live in the D. Listeners can tune in on the FM dial at 100.7 within a 5-mile radius of Ferndale, or stream online through ferndaleradio.com from anywhere.

Running a radio station isn’t cheap, and Mirowski said listener support is essential to keeping it going. “Listeners can support by going to ferndaleradio.com or ferndaleradio.com/donation, donate to help support,” she said.
