ECORSE, Mich. – Ecorse police are piecing together what happened early Friday morning that led to a particularly violent car crash in a neighborhood that killed a 20-year-old woman.
Police said accident investigators have determined that Donita Alford was driving at 75-80 miles per hour on 17th street near Outer Drive before she crashed into two other parked cars.
"The vehicle hit two parked vehicles and knocked them up into the yards. It was a lot of destruction and damage," said Ecorse police chief Mike Moore.
Moore said the speed limit on the residential street is 25 miles per hour.
Alford was thrown from the car and died at the scene.
Her friend and another man were hospitalized. A third person was taken into custody.
“I told her I loved her before she left the house,” Alford's mother, Regina Alford. “She was spending the night at her friend’s house, they work together and were going to work together in the morning.”
“You just hate to see this. You know, I’ve got a daughter who is the same age as the young lady who lost her life. It’s tragic anytime something like this happens," Moore said.
Moore said it's still being investigated whether alcohol or drugs were factors in the crash.
