Man severely injured in dog attack on Detroit's east side

American bulldog bites 44-year-old man on forearm

DETROIT – A man was brutally attacked Friday by a dog while in his backyard on Detroit's east side.

The 44-year-old man is in the hospital with severe injuries to his arm after the dog attacked him around 9 a.m. Friday on Edmore Street.

Animal control officials arrived at the scene around 10 a.m. and took the American bulldog away at around 11:15 p.m.

Video shows the dog unmoving on the ground. He wasn't shot, but it appears he was tranquilized and taken away.

The family said the man was doing work in the backyard, cleaning up after the dog, when "Beethoven" suddenly attacked and bit him on the arm.

"I heard screaming and I didn't know what to do," said Mareeshia Miller, the victim's niece. "He was yelling to call 911, so I called police, and I looked out and the dog was fighting with another dog."

The man's forearm is severely gashed in two places.

Beethoven belongs to another family who is out of state. The dog had been at the home for about three weeks, but had never been known to act out.
