Suspected serial robbers prompt Warren police shooting, chase into Detroit

1 suspect shot by police, 2 others crash stolen SUV during chase

DETROIT – Warren police were forced to open fire on robbery suspects Thursday morning before chasing two of them into Detroit.

Police confronted the suspects outside Sweet Dreams Bakery at 13 Mile and Ryan roads. They were driving a stolen Jeep and tried to run over the officers, police said. Officers opened fire, striking one of the suspects in the arm. One of the suspects were captured, but the other two sped away in the Jeep.

Warren police chased them for about 12 miles until the Jeep crashed at I-94 and Conner Street in Detroit. That's where the other two suspects were taken into custody.

It's unclear what caused the suspects to crash the Jeep, but they were traveling at a high rate of speed.

No officers were injured.

Suspects wanted in several burglaries

Warren police said they had been tracking this crew for a while. They were suspected of 5-10 break-ins, and maybe more. They are known for breaking into businesses, stealing the safe and throwing it into the back of the stolen SUV.

On Thursday, police said they were conducting surveillance at Sweet Dreams Bakery, trying to catch these robbers in the act.

"It's a pretty big deal. It's old fashioned police work. And sometime we hear that cliche but it really was. It was a multi-jurisdictional effort. A special operations crew from the Warren Police Department did a lot of leg work and did a lot of research. There's a large number of burglaries that these suspects are believed to be involved in throughout the tri-county area," said Warren Deputy Police Commissioner Matt Nichols. "Once the dust settles a little bit we will coordinate with all of the jurisdictions and compare notes and see what we can actually nail down on what these guys are responsible for."

Police said surveillance video from July 28 shows the same crew conducting a break-in and robbery at nearby Metro Bar and Grill, which is just on the other side of Ryan Road at 13 Mile Road. The video shows them using a crowbar.
