Police: Man in custody after fatally shooting Detroit officer, injuring another

‘Today is a tragic day for the Detroit police family,’ Craig said

DETROIT – Police said a Detroit police officer was killed and another was injured in a shooting Wednesday night.

Four officers were responding to reports of a home invasion in progress at 7:20 p.m. and were working to clear the home when a suspect armed with a high-powered rifle opened fire on the officers, according to Detroit Police Chief James Craig.

Two of the four officers were struck by gunfire. Craig said a three-year veteran of the force was shot in the leg. That officer is in temporary serious condition.

Another officer, an 18-year veteran, sustained a single gunshot wound to the neck. That officer has died.

Police said one of the officers was able to return fire and the suspect was struck with gunfire. That suspect is in temporary serious condition and at the hospital being treated for injuries.

“What we do believe is that this was part of a domestic situation, preliminarily, what I can say -- he was looking for his girlfriend,” Craig said.

Police said that suspect has a lengthy criminal history, including weapons charges, and he was recently released from parole.
