‘This is a crisis’

HIGHLAND PARK, Mich. – In this heat, people living at a senior apartment complex in Metro Detroit have been without real running water and air conditioning for days.

The situation has gotten so bad at the Bella Vista Glen Senior Apartments -- located on Glendale Avenue near the Lodge Freeway -- that officials with the city of Highland Park have stepped in.

“This is a crisis,” said Erwin Pelzer.

Pelzer and his neighbors said the living conditions are catastrophic.

“This don’t make no sense right now,” said Pelzer.

Bobbie Moore said for days they had no water and no air.

“All we’re doing is got our windows open and standing outside,” Moore said.

It all started May 27, when the Highland Park Water Department turned off the water to work on a water main connection going north and south on Lincoln Street.

Officials turned the water back on the next day, but June 2, the water department did some more work and again turned the water off and then back on. Residents said they didn’t have any water pressure. It’s been like that for three days. Meanwhile, the city said the problem is inside the building.

The city brought cases and cases of water for residents Saturday until things are fixed. But with no running water and no air for days, residents are fed up.

“When we take our medication, we need water. People have Asthma and Bronchitis and stuff, so we need our air,” said Vickie White.

The mayor of Highland Park said they’re concerned about what’s going on and they are monitoring the progress of the repair work.
