Vandal spray paints cars, property in Royal Oak neighborhood

Family crushed after car, mural defaced

ROYAL OAK, Mich. – A vandal is accused of defacing cars and other property with spray paint in a Royal Oak neighborhood.

Sometime late Thursday night or early Friday morning, someone appears to have spray painted vehicles and an image of a male body part in a Royal Oak neighborhood.

Resident Laura Leblanc got into her car to get to work on Friday. It was dark out, so she didn’t notice the vandalism at first. Then, she realized her entire car had been vandalized.

After she had left for work, the woman’s husband texted her saying the vandalism didn’t stop at their car -- someone had also damaged their garage.

“This is a mural I had painted three years ago by a local artist and I love it, people love it. It’s bright,” Leblanc said. “They defaced it and it broke my heart.”

Just a few hundred feet away on Lincoln Avenue, near Campbell Road, a neighbor’s car was also tagged -- but that wasn’t all. Their air bags were also stolen.

The homeowner took the car to the shop, and was told it will be months before the air bags can be replaced.

Meanwhile, Leblanc is trying to clean up the mess left behind.

“I just felt violated,” Leblanc said. “I felt like somebody thought it was great fun to ruin, and I don’t think they understand the impact or care.”

The family says they are planning to install security cameras and file a police report. The artist who did the painting says they will come back and fix it.

Anyone with information is being asked to call the police.
