13-year-old boy accused of threatening to shoot up 3 Macomb County schools faces felony charge

MACOMB COUNTY, Mich. – A 13-year-old boy accused of threatening to shoot up three schools in Warren and Sterling Heights is facing a felony charge.

The Macomb County Prosecutor’s Office has charged the 13-year-old with one count of false report or threat of terrorism, a 20-year felony. The teen was denied bond and will be held in the Macomb County Youth Home until his next court date.

The threats were made on Twitter and were targeting Carter Middle School, Cousino High School and Community High School.

A man hundreds of miles away used an algorithm he designed to identify the Tweets shortly after they were posted. He is the one that alerted the police about the threats.

When Waren police found out about the threats, they contacted Warren Consolidated Schools and classes were canceled at the three schools.

Warren police began to investigate and identified a 13-year-old as the suspect. He was taken into custody at his Warren home without incident, police said.

Detectives searched his home and did not find any firearms. Detectives analyzed digital evidence, further linking the 13-year-old to the social media threats.
