Hundreds pack into Wayne-Westland Community Schools district board meeting to discuss budget concerns

Pink slips given 20 staff, but were rescinded

WESTLAND, Mich. – Hundreds of parents, teachers, and students were packed into the Wayne-Westland Community Schools district board meeting.

They were there Monday (Dec. 18) night to express their concerns about the district’s plan of action following a budget shortfall to the tune of millions.

Pink slips were given to 20 staff members, but all were rescinded.

All of the people in attendance expressed one thing: they had very little confidence in the school board president or the district superintendent, for that matter.

That feeling was shared by several members of the board who actually voted to have the board president step aside.

This was a tense meeting where people said they felt there wasn’t enough transparency about how the district ended up misunderstanding its budget to the tune of millions and millions of dollars.

Superintendent Dr. John Dignan proposed 20 layoffs, including three social workers, four student monitors, and six custodians.

Local 4 heard from teacher after teacher who, with desperation in their voices, explained why those cuts could not happen and the impact it would have on students.
