HAZEL PARK, Mich. – Construction will soon begin at Mabel Gray, a popular Hazel Park restaurant, to replace their patio area with a permanent add-on.

The high-end American restaurant is planning to tear out its outdoor patio area starting in “a couple days,” officials wrote Sunday on social media. In its place, crews will build an addition that will provide more permanent seating regardless of the season.

“Reminiscent of the wine caves of old Europe we’re building a space to seat you more comfortably year round ... and create an area for more private group dining,” the business wrote on Instagram. “We will begin construction in a couple days, so please excuse the parking lot activity for a few months while we grow and invest in a better Mabel Gray for all of you.”

Mabel Gray will be closed from Jan. 1-8 for a “winter break,” but will resume operations on Jan. 9 and will remain open amid the construction. The restaurant will be hosting “all kinds of special events” to “make up for the lack of the patio,” officials said.

Mabel Gray opened in 2015 and has since garnered significant attention and accolades, earning the title of Detroit’s best restaurant of the year in 2017. Led by chef James Rigato, the restaurant serves a constantly rotating menu of unique and from-scratch dishes.
