Grosse Pointe psychiatrist charged in non-fatal shooting of ex-husband’s new girlfriend

Dr. Barika Butler-Quarles to 57 months to 20 years for first-degree home invasion

Prosecutor Kym Worthy has charged licensed psychiatrist Dr. Barika Butler-Quarles of Grosse Pointe in connection with the non-fatal shooting of a Texas woman.

Officials say at the time of the assault, the victim was the girlfriend of the defendant’s ex-husband, who is no longer associated with him.

The incident occurred on Aug. 6, 2021, at 7:55 p.m. in the 25000 block of Woodward Avenue for the reported shooting.

Officials located the victim outside of the residence, suffering from gunshot wounds.

The defendant entered her ex-husband’s residence without his permission.

She startled the victim before producing and firing a handgun at the victim, non-fatally wounding her.

The ex-husband was able to wrestle the weapon away from Butler-Quarles before other shots were fired.

Butler-Quarles was charged with one count of assault with intent to murder, one count of assault with intent to do great bodily harm, one count of discharge of a firearm in a building causing injury, one count of first-degree home invasion, one count of carrying a concealed weapon, and four counts of felony firearm.

On Jan. 17, 2024, Butler-Quarles was convicted by a jury on the charges:

  • Assault with intent to do Great Bodily Harm
  • First-Degree Home Invasion, Discharge of a Firearm in a Building Causing Injury
  • Three counts of Felony Firearm

Butler-Quarles was sentenced on Friday (Feb. 1) to 57 months to 20 years for first-degree home invasion, 36 months to 15 years for discharge of a firearm in a building causing injury, 29 months to 10 years for assault with intent to do great bodily harm and two years to be served consecutive tor two counts of felony firearm, except on the felony firearm count on the first-degree home invasion charge.
