Belleville student-athlete makes waves as high school quarterback is No. 1 recruit in class of 2025

Bryce Underwood has committed to LSU

BELLEVILLE, Mich. – Quarterback Bryce Underwood has lit the field on fire, posting stats that had the attention of big-time colleges, including your 2023 Michigan Wolverines in Ann Arbor.

Local 4 caught up with Underwood as he prepared to take his game to the next level at Louisiana State University (LSU).

Walking through the halls of Belleville High School, Underwood proudly wears his LSU backpack, a sign of where he is going. But he credited his community with helping him get there.

Karen Drew: “What’s it like playing for Belleville High School?”

“A lot of schools in Michigan do not have a supportive system from their community, you know, but in Belleville, it’s so different,” said Underwood.

From community parades when his team won the state championship to showing up at road games, Belleville has helped shape him.

His love of football started when he was six, becoming his passion. Combine that with Underwood’s determination, and you can see why he is a budding star.

“I’m big on working when nobody’s working,” Underwood said. Before and after, I’d be the first one on the field and the last one to leave.”

Karen Drew: “Does your dad or your mom have a phrase that either pushes you or inspires you?”

“Just be you,” Underwood said. So that came from so my initials which are B.U., so they emulate that and just say, just be you.”

“When I saw Bryce Underwood throw the football field from the parking lot to the endzone, my jaw was on the floor,” said athletic trainer Candice Price.

Underwood has energy not only on the field but also as he walks through Belleville High School, as he attracts goodness and uplifts others.

Karen Drew: “There’s something special about his spirit.”

“He has a great spirit, so you don’t never see no arrogance, or anything that comes from him,” said Belleville High School coach Calvin Norman. “You see, a genuine person.”

“I want to win a Heisman in college, I want to win a national championship, and I want to go first overall and be the first draft pick,” Underwood said. “Whenever I graduate, whenever I leave for the NFL, so I have a lot of goals in mind.”
