Detroit moves up DEA National Prescription Drug Take Back Day due to NFL draft

Event will be held on Saturday, April 20

DETROITDetroit will host its annual DEA National Prescription Drug Take Back Day on Saturday, April 20.

The rest of the country will hold the annual take-back day on Saturday, April 27, but Detroit will have it one week early because of the NFL draft.

“If you live in the city of Detroit or near a Detroit precinct, you can dispose of your prescription medication that you no longer want or has expired,” Brian McNeal, the public information officer for the DEA Detroit Division, said.

McNeal said the annual event is important, and they wanted to ensure Detroit could participate.

In April 2023, the DEA collected more than 11,000 lbs of discarded medication.

“You have pills in your medicine cabinet, and they can fuel a current addiction or start a new addiction or lead to an accidental poisoning,” McNeal said. “So if we can get those pills out of the medicine cabinets and properly disposed of, we can stop an addiction before it begins.”
