ANN ARBOR, Mich. – A $10,000 reward is being offered for information that will lead to an arrest and conviction of the suspects accused of assaulting a University of Michigan student because of their religious background.
The assault happened near the intersection of Hill Street and S Forest Avenue—just blocks away from the University of Michigan campus—at 12:45 a.m. on Sept. 15.
The 19-year-old victim reported a group of unknown males approached him while he was walking and asked if he was Jewish. When the victim answered, the suspects then allegedly assaulted him and ran away. The victim reported the assault just after 12 p.m. on Sunday.
Ann Arbor police said the victim had minor injuries and did not need to be hospitalized.
The Anti-Defamation League initially offered a $5,000 reward for information leading to the arrest and conviction of those responsible. An anonymous donor recently matched the reward and increased it to $10,000.
“There is absolutely no place for hate or ethnic intimidation in the City of Ann Arbor,” said Ann Arbor Police Chief Andre C. Anderson. “Our department stands against antisemitism and all acts of bias-motivated crimes.”
