Gunfire sparks wild 2-car pursuit into Royal Oak neighborhood

Victims vehicle was riddled with bullet holes

ROYAL OAK, Mich. – Officials are piecing together gunfire and high speeds down Woodward Avenue and even on neighborhood streets after a dramatic incident in Royal Oak.

The high-speed chase, this time, did not involve police.

Officials said the incident went on for miles. It started in Birmingham, but things escalated near 13 Mile Road and Woodward Avenue, where someone in one of the cars called 911.

The victim’s car was a Rolls Royce, and the driver of the vehicle and the passenger called the police in the matter of the shooting.

“They called 911 and reported that they were on Woodward, and a car pulled up alongside of them and fired shots at their car,” said Royal Oak police Lt. Rich Millard.

Local 4 was able to drive on the route, which featured the Rolls Royce and a Dodge Charger, at 2:20 a.m. on Sunday (Oct. 20).

Officials say the chase went for miles through the heart of Royal Oak when the Rolls Royce was leaving Birmingham and calling 911 in a panic because bullets hit their vehicle.

The men thought they were hit and told officials that the people in the Dodge Charger were chasing them.

However, officials said the Rolls-Royce driver was the one chasing the Dodge Charger.

“While they were on 911 with us, they are pursuing a Dodge Charger on 12 Mile to Campbell (Road), and it went into the neighborhoods,” Millard said. “We encouraged them to stop pursuing the vehicle, but they continued.”

The driver of the Rolls Royce chased the driver of the charger across Royal Oak and into a culdesac, where the driver of the Dodge Charger drove into a backyard before getting out and running.

“Whether it’s random, I don’t think it was random,” Millard said. “Some things still don’t make sense. The victim’s car is a reddish Rolls Royce, and it’s got several bullet holes in it.”

Royal Oak police said they are canvassing the area with two K-9s in the neighborhood and a drone as they continue to look for anyone who could help lead to a conclusion.
