OAKLAND COUNTY, Mich. – Health officials in Oakland County said an adult has a confirmed mumps case.
On Friday, April 4, 2025, the Oakland County Health Division said a mumps case was confirmed in an adult in the county. They said it’s the first case in the county since 2022 and the ninth mumps case in Michigan in 2025.

Mumps is a contagious viral infection that affects the salivary glands.
“This case of mumps, coming just weeks after Oakland County’s first measles case of the year, underscores the essential role of vaccination in protecting our communities,” said Kate Guzmán, Oakland County health officer. “The MMR vaccine remains our best defense against measles, mumps and rubella, offering highly effective protection against these serious diseases and helping to prevent outbreaks.”

How does mumps spread?
Mumps spreads through direct contact with saliva or respiratory droplets from the mouth, nose, or throat.
What are the symptoms of mumps?
Mumps symptoms usually appear 16 to 18 days after exposure.
Symptoms include the following:
- Fever.
- Headache.
- Muscle aches or pain.
- Loss of appetite.
- Fatigue.
- Swelling on one or both sides of the face.
- Jaw pain or swelling.
- Pain or tenderness around the swelling.
How serious is mumps?
According to health officials, most people with mumps recover within two weeks, but serious complications can occur.
Serious complications include hearing loss and inflammation of the testicles, ovaries, breast tissue, pancreas, brain and tissue covering the brain, and spinal cord. Rarely, people have died after getting mumps.
There is no treatment for mumps; doctors can only help manage symptoms, but there is a vaccine.
