Michigan schools targeted in statewide hoax threats, lockdowns triggered

Chippewa Valley Schools said they received an anonymous threat on Tuesday as well

The school year has just started, and already, a threat has prompted schools in Clinton Township to go into lockdown.

Chippewa Valley Schools said late this morning that they received an anonymous threat on Tuesday (Sept. 9).

There was a lot of relief here knowing that the threat was not credible, but who is responsible for making this call, and several others?

Things were quiet when Local 4 arrived, but a neighbor living near Wyandotte Middle School described seeing police cruisers blocking the entrance and parents showing up, concerned about their children.

It wasn’t just there. Chippewa Valley Schools issued a statement, stating that multiple schools throughout Michigan received hoax phone calls on Sept. 8, 2025, all originating from an out-of-state phone number.

Officials say the number was responsible for calling in each of those false threats.

Clinton Township police responded quickly, as students and staff remained indoors in “secure mode,” meaning no one was allowed in or out of the building until the threat was cleared.

Their investigation into who is responsible continues, and there will be consequences.

Recently, Michigan lawmakers introduced two bills targeting so-called swatting calls — where someone makes a false emergency call to prompt law enforcement to respond.

If passed, swatting would be a felony charge punishable by up to four years in prison. If anyone is hurt, there could be even more severe penalties, and parents may be held responsible for restitution.
