Wayne County woman killed in domestic assault, police say

Suspect arrested

CANTON TOWNSHIP, Mich. – A person has been arrested after a woman was found dead in a Canton Township home on Monday.

Investigators found the body of a 30-year-old woman inside her home on Sept. 8.

Canton Township police were initially called because a woman was not breathing. When officers got to the home on Pinehurst Drive near Cherry Hill and Canton Center roads, they discovered the body.

A suspect was arrested, and police are investigating the death as a domestic assault.

“The whole systemic issue with domestic violence is really sadening,” said Christine Kinal, the CEO of HAVEN.

It’s estimated that one in four people across the country has experienced abuse from an intimate partner.

“If you look at the FBI statistics and look at family trouble, calls for service, domestic violence, of reported crimes coupled with what we know advocacies like HAVEN have, it’s alarming,” said Kinal.

Local 4 spoke with HAVEN, a domestic violence shelter in Oakland County.

“Oftentimes, we found that it takes at least seven times for someone to seek help,” said Kinal. “So, that is alarming to me.”

If you see the signs of abuse, including physical injuries, isolation or controlling behavior, advocates are urging people to speak up.

“Believe your intuition, ask questions, say it just doesn’t seem right,” said Kinal.

In recent weeks, Metro Detroit women have been killed at work, at home, in front of their children and shot in their car.

“I’ve heard this question asked, ‘Why didn’t you leave?’ And that’s the question we want to avoid when we’re trying to help people because that’s going to be the question that’s asked of them and that’s going to make them not report next time,” said Kinal.
