As the first wave of snow makes its way through Metro Detroit, here’s what to know about the second wave that’s expected on Tuesday evening.

During the first wave on Tuesday morning, Ann Arbor saw an inch of snow in about 90 minutes. The first wave is expected to be out of the area by noon.

Round 2: Timing, what to expect

Round two is expected to be messier, with snow returning after 8 p.m. and changing between wet snow, freezing rain, and rain for parts of Southeast Michigan overnight through Wednesday morning.

One to five inches is expected (with the higher totals expected in areas near the Thumb), but the rain and snow mix makes it difficult to estimate accumulation.

The rain/snow line is highly sensitive, which makes forecasting snow totals across the Metro area tricky. It will be blustery with gusts up to 30 mph and temperatures will fall into Wednesday morning, where a re-freeze will be a concern.

A winter weather advisory has been issued for the Thumb region from 10 p.m. Tuesday until 4 p.m. Wednesday.

Snow totals in that area will be between 3 to 5 inches from this evening through tomorrow.
