In February, crews will begin with preliminary work of clearing and preparing the freeway shoulders and medians to allow for traffic shifts needed during the project.

Here’s what to know about the construction project:

How much of the freeway will be restored?

MDOT will repair 12.7 miles of I-94 from east of I-275 to west of US-12 (Michigan Avenue).

What cities will this project affect?

Romulus, Taylor, Allen Park, Dearborn Heights, Melvindale and Dearborn will be affected by the Restore I-94 project.

Will the freeway stay open during the project?

One to two lanes of I-94 are expected to remain open in each direction for most of the construction project, according to MDOT, but the agency said drivers should expect many ramp closures.

MDOT said access to the airport will be maintained throughout the project, along with access to Gate 10 at the Ford Rouge Plant.

What type of improvements will be made during the project?

The construction project includes “rebuilding and realigning the roadway, concrete repairs/patching, bridge work, ramp work, lighting improvements, cable barrier work, improved drainage, Intelligent Transportation System upgrades and building an entirely new interchange at Ecorse Road,” and other improvements, according to MDOT.

According to MDOT, the construction project consists of five segments, including the following:

  • I-94 from Wayne Road to Middlebelt Road
  • I-94 from Middle Belt Road to Beech Daly Road
  • I-94 from Beech Daly Road to Pelham Road
  • I-94 from Pelham Road to Oakwood Boulevard
  • I-94/Schaefer Road Interchange (Ford Rouge Plant Gate 10 Entrance)
