Northern Michigan wildfire now measuring 2,710 acres is 60% contained
The Blue Lakes Fire in Montmorency and Cheboygan counties now measures at 2,710 acres, and state officials say the blaze is about 60% contained as of Sunday, May 15. The growth in acreage covered by the fire from Saturday’s estimate of 2,300 acres is largely due to a more accurate GPS measurement of the area, according to the Michigan Department of Natural Resources (DNR).

Devyn Kenneth-Trevor MacLeod was arraigned on the charges on Dec. 28, according to the Michigan State Police. The alleged victim’s parents told police they confronted the teen about the alleged incidents, and the teen claimed to have had several sexual encounters with the suspect earlier in the month. BRIDGEPORT TWP., MI - A Cheboygan woman died in a motorcycle crash Sunday afternoon in Saginaw County, state police said. Paramedics transported the woman, whose name has not been released, to a local hospital where she died from injuries suffered in the crash. The man suffered non-life threatening injuries and received treatment at a local hospital, police said. Neither the man nor the woman had on a helmet, police said, and alcohol is not considered a factor in the crash. The state police’s Third District Traffic Crash Reconstruction team also assisted at the scene.

Issac Wright, 25, of Cincinnati, was arraigned Thursday via video in Cheboygan District Court on a charge of felony trespass upon a key transportation facility. Photos taken on the bridge’s south tower were posted in November on social media. The bridge connects Michigan’s Upper and Lower peninsulas. Chartier said she only is representing Wright in the Michigan bridge case.
Flint Powers Catholic celebrates in triplicate at Division 3 girls golf regional
FLINT – Powers Catholic’s girls golf team had plenty to celebrate Monday at Flint Golf Club. For starters, the Chargers won the Division 3 regional team championship to qualify for the state championships in two weeks. And in case that wasn’t enough, Brochu celebrated her 17th birthday before and after the round but certainly not during. “After the first hole I completely forgot it was my birthday,” said Brochu, Powers' No. Powers will be trying to win its seventh state championship in girls golf.

Man faces charges after elk poached in Michigan forest
WOLVERINE, Mich. A man has been arrested in connection with the poaching of a cow elk in a northern Michigan state forest. Jakob Gagnon, 21, was arraigned Aug. 28 in Cheboygan County District Court on misdemeanor taking an elk without a license and possessing stolen property charges, according to the state's Natural Resources department. Gagnon is accused of shooting and later processing the elk. Gagnon and Turbin live in Cheboygan Countys Wolverine, northwest of the state forest. Authorities continue to investigate the poaching of five elk in late 2019.
Birmingham family moves to Cheboygan so kids can attend in-person classes
CHEBOYGAN, Mich. A family made the call to temporarily move from Birmingham to Cheboygan so their children can attend in-person classes. It was just a few weeks ago when the Zane family learned that their two children, Mariam and Vivian, would be starting school online this fall. They decided a sustainable option would be to move up to their cottage in Cheboygan where their children could attend in-person classes. They said it wasnt an easy option to take their daughters away from their home and their friends, but for now, its what they see best fit for their daughters education. The Zane family said they want to come back and have their children learn at Harlan Elementary, but they believe this is their best option for now.
Woman arrested after leading police chase over Mackinac Bridge
OTSEGO COUNTY, Mich. A driver was arrested after leading police on a chase over the Mackinac Bridge on Thursday morning. Officials say the driver, a 31-year-old woman from Waterford, initially pulled over but then fled the scene. Stop sticks were successfully deployed and the Volkswagen continued to drive across the Mackinac Bridge on its rims. Police say bridge traffic was halted by the Mackinac Bridge Authority after they were notified of the situation. The woman was then arrested and transported to the Otsego County Jail.

(SANE)CHEBOYGAN COUNTY, Mich. - A Detroit man and a man and woman from Northern Michigan were arrested on I-75 while transporting meth, cocaine and fentanyl from Metro Detroit, police said. Detectives from Straits Area Narcotics Enforcement learned Saturday that three people were transporting drugs to Cheboygan from Metro Detroit, according to authorities. Ashanti Brian Lockett, 45, of Detroit; Janine Louise Schmidt, 66, of Cheboygan; and a 35-year-old Cheboygan man were taken into custody, officials said. Schmit is charged with possession with intent to deliver methamphetamine, second or subsequent offense, and habitual offense -- fourth offense notice.
3 historic Michigan lighthouses on the Great Lakes to be auctioned
TRAVERSE CITY, Mich. - Three historic Great Lakes lighthouses owned by the federal government are going on the auction block. The Ontonagon Breakwater lighthouse will also be auctioned. Its the westernmost lighthouse in Michigans Upper Peninsula, perched at the entrance of the channel leading to the Ontonagon River from Lake Superior. It sits on a sandbar between Superior, Wisconsin, and Duluth, Minnesota. The U.S. General Services Administration is offering the lighthouses through an online auction .
