INKSTER, Mich. – A 19-year-old man was shot by police after fleeing a traffic stop, crashing an SUV into another vehicle, and killing its driver during an operation tied to a homicide investigation.

Michigan State Police Troopers said they believe the man is linked to the murder of two teens in Inkster last week.

The incident occurred on Friday (April 17) around 2:45 p.m. on Parkwood Street and Middlebelt Road, as members of the Michigan State Police Emergency Support Team and Second District Special Investigation Section were preparing to execute a search warrant at a home in Inkster as part of a homicide probe.

Police said a man exited the residence and got into an SUV with a female passenger.

oTroopers attempted a traffic stop, but the SUV fled, leading to a short pursuit.

Officials said the suspect continued eastbound on Parkwood, ran a red light at Parkwood and Oakwood, and struck a passenger vehicle.

Police said the driver of the struck vehicle, a man who was the sole occupant, was pronounced dead at the scene from injuries sustained in the crash.

After the collision, police said the suspect ran from the SUV on foot.

Troopers fired shots as he fled, striking him in the lower body, police said.

The 19-year-old was transported to a Metro Detroit hospital and was in stable condition.

Police said two firearms were recovered from the suspect.

The female passenger inside the SUV was also injured and taken to a hospital. Her condition was not immediately released.

The troopers involved in the shooting have been placed on administrative leave under department policy.

The Michigan State Police Third District Investigative Response Team is handling the investigation.

Officials said the case will be reviewed by the state Attorney General once the investigation is complete.

Police said the incident remains under investigation and may be connected to a recent double homicide in Inkster.

No charges have been announced.
